Labour Day Menu

(Cathy) Here is our proposed menu for our get together on Labour Day Sunday:

-smoked pulled pork on a bun
-crockpot baked beans
-coleslaw
-corn on the cob
-apple pie for dessert
-hot dogs for any kids who don't like the pulled pork
-veggie sticks: ie: carrots, celery, peppers

Sunshine's mother-in-law has a great recipe for coleslaw and Carolin is the best baker among us four ladies - hint, hint, lol!

Carolin is on vacation at the moment in the Caribbean and was supposed to be home a few days ago. She and the Husband are stranded on an island!!! She has been in contact with her "Blackberry". Let's hope they make it home soon!

Here's hoping for good weather this weekend!

Catch Up Fridays

I can't believe that next week will be our final week of summer vacation. It has flown by and the start of school and work is around the corner.(Cathy - shhhhhhh!) Mr Sunshine and I had our yearly physicals yesterday, well, in our case it has been over two years since our last one. I have finally figured out why I have been feeling so sick since the second week of July. I have developed an ulcer again. I am suppose to take my ulcer medication everyday for the rest of my life but taking a pill a day is not what I like to do, so I don't. Well, starting August 1st after feeling so unwell I started the ulcer medication as a precaution and this week is the first week that I have actually started to feel better. Well, the doctor checked me out and as a surprise to me, I have an ulcer that is just starting to heel over. I have dealt with this my whole life, I really should know better and I should have realized it sooner and not have let things get so bad. Well, I am definitely going to take my medicine everyday from now on. Enough of that, I am just happy to be feeling better and smiling again for the first time in what seems like a long while, so I am told. I am so glad you are feeling better. Boy, both you and mom with ulcers! I am just so glad it's something that can be fixed!
Well next week is our shopping trip to Pennsylvania with my cousin and her family and maybe even my sister and my dad. (Is this where the McDonald's is that straddles a state line?) Good memory Cathy, yes it is. Other then that we will be doing some day trips around the city and getting back into the school routine.(yech!) I also have a family picnic on Saturday and soccer fun day for Little Miss Sunshine. Miss Teen Sunshine has been playing her new guitar hero and she is really enjoying that.
I am looking forward to seeming everyone next week. Cathy, have you thought about what you would like me to bring? Carolin, how was your trip? When are you back? Louise, what have you been up to?
So, what has my week been like. I was in the garden and transplanted some shrubs from one spot to another. I used to be so afraid to move things around once planted. I remember watching Sunshine in her garden. If she didn't like something where is was, she had no qualms about moving it! It was a great way to garden; very freeing. I have slowly developed the ability to not feel guilty about moving things around. I am so happy with how things look now and it only took a year and a half to talk myself into it, lol! Way to go Cathy!!!
Good news! Hubby is home, yeah! I am so happy for you and your whole family!!!!! Our older son is now officially a lifeguard! He passed his NLS today! Congratulations, what an accomplishment!!!! I remember starting him (and his brother) in swimming lessons when he was three and thinking how it would be great if he continued until NLS. Boy, time has flown. We are so proud!
He is now going for his swim instructors and if he passes he has been told he will be hired by the city parks and rec dept. This would be a great part time job so I hope he does well.
One week until we all get together. I have been playing with a menu but I have not yet decided. I will let you all know early in the week.
Hey Carolin, I hope you and the Husband are having a great time. You both deserve a great week to do nothing but RELAX!

Have a great weekend everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

September - The Start of Our Fiscal Year

(Cathy) I am sitting here looking out upon this cool, rainy day. I find myself using the time to plan the next few weeks. It's funny because as much as I look forward to the Labour Day Weekend, (as it will be the first time all summer that we ladies will be together with our families), it signifies the end of summer. When you think about it, growing up in Canada our personal fiscal year is September to September. Even when I speak with people who do not have children in school, they will still comment that September is the start.
We have two more weeks to get in all that we want before summer ends. Summer doesn't officially end until September 21st. We can still have amazing weather up until fall, but, once school starts it's plan, plan, plan. First up, Thanksgiving; next is Christmas!!!

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Catch up Fridays

(Sunshine) Well, I wonder how everyone is doing. Its been same old same old around here with a little touch of busy and fun with Little Miss Sunshine reading every word as I type. We had visitors from Italy, my cousin and his wife who just left on Wednesday evening so we have been spending some time practicing our Italian Language. Somehow, somewhere, I have caught a mysterious summer cold. I am so congested that my head is aching so I am resting and being very quiet trying to shake it off before my busy weekend begins. We have a dinner dance on Saturday night with all of my family. My dad really wants us all to be there. I haven't been to anything like that since I was a kid. What do I even wear to something like that? Oh well, it should be a fun night. Then on Sunday we have my niece's birthday party. Mr Sunshine is on vacation for the next two weeks starting on Tuesday. We have some appointments on certain days and we are arranging a trip to Pennsylvania for a couple of days before school starts and before Cathy's big get together.(Cathy - I can't wait to get us all together again!) Little Miss Sunshine had built a huge fort out of a great box that is taking up all of the spare bedroom(computer room). I have not even been able to get on the computer as there is no room, I had to squeeze in for this post. She is also anxiously waiting for a new episode of, "Sunny With A Chance," that will premier tonight. Oops, too much TV watching while mummy is sick and spending most of the day sleeping. It is sweet how well she takes care of me and gives me lots of hugs and kisses even though I keep telling her that she has to be careful because I don't want her to get sick (there goes anther kiss as she is reading this). Miss Teen Sunshine has been busy with two physiotherapy appointments a week, the Naturopath appointment, and her music lesson this week. She has exercises that she had to do for her ankle daily. Amongst the dinners with, "The Italian People." as she calls them and everything else going on, her favourite thing to do is read, read read. Well that's all for now.
(Cathy)Here I was thinking I was the only one who was sick. I too am suffering with a terrible summer head cold. My head feels like it's going to fly off of my head at any moment. I am stuffed up, coughing and miserable! Remember, I am on vacation!!! I was at the doctor's with our older one and she just said it's a virus and could possible last up to three weeks. I am on week one of my four week vacation. I am trying really hard not to let this get in the way.
So, what else is new. I have good news!!! Hubby will be back in town with a new job starting in two weeks! Yeah!
Our older son has his first job interview on Sunday. We are keeping our fingers crossed. It's at a pool with the city. It would make for a good part time job while he is still in school. Our younger son is doing odd jobs with a friend of ours. He wants to earn enough money to purchase a hammock tent. That's right, it's a tent that you strap between two trees and sleep in it.
Tomorrow, we are having a family get together at our home as my aunt and uncle are visiting from Jamaica. It's a good time for my mom to get together with all of her siblings. I hope it doesn't rain so we can be outside with all of the kids. So far the weather is sounding good.
Is anyone going to the Ex?
(Carolin)
I am coming home!

I hope that everyone is doing well. Have a great weekend everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summer Garden Update

There are a few things I love about the month of August. First of all, I am usually on vacation! The weather in August is pretty typical: hot, hazy and humid. The humidity breaks with violent thunder storms which blow in and out just as fast. It's during the month of August that the garden is at it's fullest. The annuals in pots or in the garden have filled out with loads of colour. The vegetable garden is providing a fresh summer feast and the perennials have grown again. Summer garden chores consist of weeding and pruning and especially deadheading to prolong bloom. There is always something to do and gardening helps to keep you in shape with all of the bending and reaching, (another great side benefit!). Here are a few photos of my garden this summer. Enjoy!

Catch Up Fridays

(Cathy) Some people think of Friday the 13th as an unlucky day. I disagree. To me it's a special day which occurs infrequently and good things happen. I consider it a good luck day. So, to all of my friends out there: have a grand Friday the 13th! (Sunshine) Did you know that for Italians 13 is actually a very lucky number?

Another week has passed and I have only had an e-mail from Louise. She was checking on my mom, (who is still doing great!) and commiserating with me on my additional weight! I will conquer it! My girlfriend, Carol, who lives in Calgary is coming out to visit in October. She is a runner and runs marathons. She is signed up for the Toronto marathon this year! She is doing really well and I can't wait to see her. It's been years since we have actually seen each other in person. You are going to have so much fun catching up.

I have to call Sunshine and see how she is feeling. I really, really hope she had a better week this week. It can be a vicious circle when you feel down and depressed and it takes a lot of inner strength to battle it! I know Sunshine and I know she will be successful! Its been a much better week. I hope that your mom is still doing great.

Mom and my sister and I went to the mall this past Tuesday to by a fall/spring wardrobe for my sister who's a teacher. Let me tell you we had a great time! We ended up in, "Reitmans" and purchased everything there! Carolin, you would be proud as we had $125.00 worth of coupons! Before the coupons the bill was $499.00 plus tax. Then they applied a 20pct discount to it all, (there's a sale on now), and then applied the coupons. What a deal! I did manage to get a sweater out of the day. As I wear a uniform to work my wardrobe tends to be thin as I rarely wear anything out. I do get tired of looking at it though, lol!

Once last thing. I am on VACATION! For a month! Enough said! Happy Vacation Cathy!!!!

It has been a very busy week. My dad had his angiogram and they did not find any significant blockage which is great news. We need to speak to the cardiologist next week to find out why the pain in his chest is still there. He could not stay home alone for the fist 24 hours so we finally convinced him to come to my house. He was here all week and went home last night. We were all hoping that he would stay until the weekend was over but he really wanted to get back to his own place. I hope that he takes it easy and takes care of himself. He needs to rest and take it easy for at least another week or so. It was great having him over. It kept me busy and feeling good and the house was always filled with people visiting him. All of the grand children rallied around him all day long and they helped keep an eye on him. I had some appointments that I had to keep and anytime I needed to go somewhere, there were always at least two grandchildren watching over him. He is a lucky man and we are lucky to have him.

Cake decorating Level 1 is complete. We finished it last night and we really learned a lot. Little Miss Sunshine loved it and her final cake is very impressive. There are still two more levels to complete sometime in the future. Miss Teen Sunshine started physiotherapy for her ankle last week and she has to go twice a week for the next month. I really hope that it helps to heal the ankle. She also has an appointment at the hospital on Monday for the broken finger and an appointment on Wednesday with a Naturopth. I am hoping that someone can give us some help to make those bones a little bit stronger if possible. That's about all for now. I hope that everyone is doing well. Summer is flying by and everyday in my day timer seems to be double booked. How is that possible? Well school and work will resume soon. Cathy is our get together in September still a go? (Don't be mad at me asking, I just thought that I would confirm). Yes, yes, yes it is! Still on the Sunday of Labour Day weekend, :)!

(Carolin) Being Friday the 13th I have seen numerous motorcycles out and about. My sister is in Toronto visiting from Calgary and her and Mom drove out to camp for a visit yesterday. I then took them to Picton for a walk around and something to eat. I left the Devo in charge at camp. She is 17 and has been working with me all summer. The 3 kitchen staff this week were excited to be on their own. We prepped everything and went over the dinner menu a few times. I am confident all went well.

Glad you had fun shopping Cathy. Rietman's is my favorite store for clothes. I always find comfortable nice stuff there. One more week of camp to go then I can sleep in my own bed again for a day or two before I am gone again.

Have a great weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3D Television

Cathy here,

Just a thought. I was hearing the add on the radio for the new dance movie coming out in 3D. Just how long do you think it will take before 3D televisions are common in everyone's home? As the technology races along, will we still have to wear the special glasses?

Catch Up Fridays

(Cathy) Well, it's been a strange week. I have not even spoken with the other ladies!! I have no idea what's going on. I look forward to "catching up" with them through our blog!

With Hubby working out of town I have begun to notice a few things. For one, I'm gaining wait. No, it's not because I'm sitting moping on the couch eating bonbons, lol! It's quite the opposite! I'm just not hungry so I'm not eating. I understand that when you stop eating, it messes with your metabolism. So now instead of my body burning up what I eat, it's storing it. I have actually gained 20 pounds!!!!! Disgusting, so now I have to make a point to eat, even when I'm not hungry! I have been exercising. I run up and down 4 flights of steps 3 times a day at work. In the beginning I would call for an ambulance to please take me and put me out of my misery! Now, I can get to the top and still be talking, and I walk over 10,000 steps a day! I am still gardening, however, I could accompany the boys when they walk the dog but I enjoy that half hour to myself. I just have to be continually aware of what I eat and do now to try to keep myself fit. Just another thing to add to my ever expanding list!

(Carolin)20 pounds Cathy, welcome to the other side :)

Nothing strange here if you exclude the couple dozen teenagers I am surrounded with. I had some new staff this week and on the most part it was fine.

I and Moobah (his camp name) pulled a raid on the little one this morning. It was now half an hour after breakfast. I had set her alarm, paged her three times and she still had not got out of bed. So Moobah filled up a bucket of water and we went to my cabin. I snuck around to the back and woke her up through the window with a warning that she was about to get raided. When she sat up Moobah was standing at the door with the jug of water. Let's just say she was up and dressed ASAP! Mind you she was not happy with me.

We did have a talk about her pulling raids on others and how much fun it is. And so if you dish it out then you have to be able to take it. Next time I won't be so nice as to warn her first.

(Sunshine) Well its been a busy week and a strange week at that. I am kind of tired of talking about the same old things all the time but then I would not be talking about my life if I didn't. This weekend was my deceased brother in law's 9th anniversary mass. We all went to church and during the service I started to feel very unwell. I felt nauseous and dizzy and very shaky and uneasy. I had to leave the service and was searching for a bathroom but the one in the church was unlocked to Mr Sunshine and Little Miss Sunshine and I went to one at Tim Horton's. I felt so weird and my stomach started hurting and I thought that I was going to throw up, but I never did. We were scheduled to go up to a friend's cottage for a few days so we continued the 3 hour drive there. I took some of my friend's daytime gravol for a few days and gradually started to feel a bit better, but I am still not myself. Little Miss Sunshine keeps asking me what's wrong as she says that I look so sad. I don't really have an answer, I just feel like sobbing and staying in bed. I hate that my family has to even see me like this and I want it all to go away. I have felt this way in the past but not for some time now. I am exhausted and I have no appetite and I am just so sad. I have been keeping busy with orthodontist appointments, a trip to the passport office, a trip to the walk in clinic (Miss Teen Sunshine has fractured her pinky finger from catching a football at the cottage and she starts physiotherapy next week for her sprained and re injured ankle). I feel so bad for her and I am worried about how she will feel when she is older (will she be in such pain because of all of the breaks and arthritis and will she be more prone to breaking a hip or something?) I seem to be the only one who is concerned, the many doctors that we have seen listen to my worries but they really don't even bat an eye when I am speaking. She no longer wants to go to the pediatrician and she does not like my family doctor so I am on the hunt for a female doctor that she would feel comfortable with. It's an ongoing battle.

Little Miss Sunshine and I have started the cake decorating class at Michael's and she is really enjoying it. I am too. I just find it hard to sit still while the teacher is talking, and I am trying not to embarrass myself any further by fainting which is in the back of my mind for the whole two hours. Next week is busy too, my dad is scheduled for his angiogram on Monday and that will take up most of the day and he may have to stay overnight depending on what they find. Miss Teen Sunshine has her physiotherapy appointment and possibly a visit to the hospital to get the finger cast (I will find that out tomorrow) and also soccer and cake decorating classes and so much more that I can't even remember at the moment. Its been a bit of a challenging week, but I am trying my best to get through it all and I know that that others have so much more to deal with and I am just being a baby and feeling sorry for myself. Sorry for bothering you all with my seemingly petty issues, I am trying hard to control my emotions, Wish me luck.

I miss you girls very much and it's great to catch up through our blog. Cathy, you are doing a great job and you have always been such a perfect weight that I am sure that you will be back to your old (not literally) self in no time. Carolin, we all miss you and I admire the way you just go and do things, I am sure that it is not easy, but I must say that you make it all look so simple.

Everyone take care and have a wonderful weekend!!!!!!
